Charleville AFC 1 St Kevin’s 2
Last Saturday evening, Charleville U14s lined out for their last 16 National Cup fixture against St Kevin’s Boys from Dublin. Charleville started the game well and it was evident from the start that the Kevin’s Team were strong and very good technically.
Charleville in preparation for this had set themselves up in training to counteract this and lined out with a 4:2:3:1 formation. The Charleville team adhered to the coaching plan admirably; however after about 15 minutes Kevin’s went ahead with a lucky goal after a colliding of players in the Charleville box led to the ball falling for the Kevin’s player who rolled it home for a 1- 0 lead.
Charleville however stayed with their plan and gradually forced their way into the game,
20 minutes into the second half they were very unlucky not to have been awarded a penalty when Finn Curtin was brought down in the box, 4 minutes later a great through ball by Jamie O’Toole found Brian Nagy who out powered the Kevin’s defender and fired home past the Goalkeeper to ecstatic scenes of jubilation to level the game 1-1.
St Kevin’s were now shaken and a back pass shortly after by the Kevin’s defender to their goalkeeper saw the keeper pick up the ball and hence the ref gave an indirect free kick to Charleville just on the edge of box, Brian Nagy touched the ball back to Jamie O’Toole who hammered the ball against the left upright; So Near. With 5 minutes left Kevin’s advanced down the left hand side and with an in swinging pass from the left found a Kevin’s forward who tapped in from close range.
Such disappointment but my God what a performance from this young Charleville team. Kevin’s Boys were rattled and with some luck Charleville could have nudged a win.
It was a tremendous performance and has shown the development and strength of the lads. These are the days where you learn and develop as a team. Thanks so much to all supporters on the day. Thanks to all parents for preparing the food and providing a tremendous layout post game for the St Kevin’s & Charleville Squads; it was much appreciated and acknowledged. Thanks to Peter O’Toole and Paul Moffett for helping on the day with the management of the team. Thanks to Ladislav for the tremendous photos taken.
Finally thanks to Mark Kavanagh (Our Coach); super preparation and adherence to same by the team on the day.
