Herbertstown 2 Charleville AFC 3
On Saturday last we made the journey over to Herbertstown, a ground where you are made to work very hard for any point you get.
With the conditions sunny, and a strong wind at times, we settled the quicker of the 2 teams. For the first ten minutes we dominated, creating numerous chances with shots from Tristan Begley, Jack Jones and Ryan Carleton but we didn’t keep the ball low enough to trouble their goalie.
As that saying goes “if you don’t take your chances it’ll come back to haunt you” and it sure did. When on 14 minutes as we attacked down the left wing the ball broke and Herbertstown caught us on the counter attack to make it 1-0. It would have been easy for us to sit back after that set back but we went on the front foot once again. And we got our reward when a thunderbolt of a shot from Tristan Begley cannoned off the post and fell to the feet of Chris Donovan who slotted the ball home passed two Herbertstown defenders to make it 1-1. For the remainder of the first half both teams had half chances to improve the score line.
Early in the second half we found ourselves under a bit of pressure due the wind. But that pressure was eased when Daniel Donovan got on the ball on the right wing and his cross/shot flew into the far corner of the goal to make it 1-2. Herbertstown were never out of the game and always carried a threat going forward. We knew we would need another goal or two to put the game out of their reach. On the hour mark Chris Donovan truly obliged when the ball came to him on the edge of the box and he lobbed the goalie for this second goal of the game and our third,1-3. As the game was drawing to a close Herbertstown really applied the pressure to try and get something out of the game. And their pressure paid off when they pulled a goal back making it 2-3. As the game entered injury time our players had to dig deep to keep the score line 2-3. Every one of our players showed great character to close out the game and make sure we brought the three points home with us.
A big thank you to Billy Kiely for helping us out and didn’t look one bit out of place in the team.
