Charleville AFC 5-4 Newport Town (After Extra Time) 3 Cian McNamara, Shane Dillon, Donal O’Connell

Charleville AFC progressed to the 1/4 final stage of the Lawson Cup after beating fellow Premier A side Newport Town by the odd goal in 9 last Sunday morning.

Both teams struggled with the high winds and driving rain during the course of the match but still managed to play enough football to entertain the watching crowd with 9 goals including an extra time winner from Cian McNamara.
It was McNamara that opened the scoring on 10 mins for the home side before Newport equalised with a free kick from distance. Top scorer Shane Dillon restored the lead on the half hour mark and Charleville led 2-1 at the break.
Just into the 2nd half Newport equalised again, however another McNamara strike and a goal for recent new signing Donal O’Connell had seemed to win the game for Charleville. Newport though had other ideas and 2 late goals forced the tie in extra time.

In the 1st half of the additional time McNamara sealed his hat-trick and the win with a fine finish from the edge of the area.

Newport battled until the final whistle but Charleville claimed a deserved victory over the 2hrs of play.
