Carew Park 2-1 Charleville AFC
(Shane Dillon)Charleville AFC missed a great opportunity last Sunday to put 10 points between themselves and 3rd placed Carew Park with a lack lustre performance in Limerick City
2 set piece goals in the 1st half handed the home side a half time lead, both goals coming from corners, the first a header from close range the 2nd a corner which went in direct over everyone’s head. Charleville had their moments, most notably when Cian McNamara broke free from midfield and was brought down by the defender when clear in on goal, only a yellow card was issued much to the frustration of the Charleville team and management. Ciarain Carey probably had Charleville’s best chance of the half when his snap shot from 12 yards was deflected over the bar for a corner.
After the half time break, Jack O’Callaghan and Eoin Clifford were introduced from the bench along with the returning Gary Ward. Charleville’s 2nd half performance was much brighter and the whole team looked more comfortable in possession. It was no surprise when on the hour, top scorer Shane Dillon scored after being played in by O’Callaghan. After this goal it was almost one-way traffic now as Charleville laid siege on the home goal but could not find the quality required to grab and equaliser.
Carew Park did have chances of their own on the break to wrap up the points but a combination of good goalkeeping, and wayward finishing the home side could not make the game safe.
