Charleville AFC 2 Cahrerdavin 1
Charleville U17s had a brilliant win over Division one side Caherdavin last Saturday nights under lights. Huge underdogs going into the game but that did not faze the boys as they more than matched their opponents on a beautiful night for football. The opening half was an even affair with no quarter asked or given. Charleville had a couple of sightings from free kicks through Aaron Moffatt before Cody Kok was played in by Kristian O Gorman and he squared for Eoin O Mahoney to tap home only for the referee deem for him to be offside to the bemusement of all. Tony Fernandes broke through late in the half and his effort was well saved by the Caherdavin goalie. At the other end Luis Paolo was in inspired form and he made a terrific double save just before half time to keep the game level. Charleville attacked right from the start of the second half and were rewarded when Stephen Minihane, Blake Doherty combined to send Cody Kok down the wing and he skipped past a couple of defenders before being brought down for a penalty. Aaron Moffatt stepped up and coolly slotted away for a 1-0 lead. This was a lead that the boys held onto until Injury time when after long a period of pressure and multiple free kicks and corners Caherdavin equalised when a scramble after an umpteenth corner saw a Caherdavin player toe poke home to equal delight of their players and supporters. The game looked to be gone from the boys as they were dead on their feet but somehow found that extra bit to find a winner a minute later. After another Caherdavin corner the ball was played up to Aaron Moffatt, with Stephen Minihane taking two defenders away with a run to the right, Aaron came back in played a ball back over to Cillian O Riordan who skipped past two and sent a curling effort into the far top corner. A goal worthy of winning any game. There were still a few minutes to hold out but the back four of Blake Doherty, Sean Carroll, Eoin O Mahoney & Rob Carroll, along with goalie Luis Paolo, Fionn O Connor and Kristian O Gorman were immense all through and held firm. Jack Hogan and and Sean Bresnan played their part also when introduced. A great result and attitude from all will see them play host to Granville Rangers in the next round.
