FAI Junior Cup result
Charleville AFC 2 Regional United B, 1
Scorers Luke Doyle and Cian McNamara
Charleville AFC started their FAI Junior cup campaign with a hard-fought win last Sunday morning over a young and enthusiastic Regional B side from 2 leagues lower in the league structure.
In what was an extremely even and competitive 1st half, Charleville went in front in the 33rd minute when Luke Doyle found some space coming in off the right wing and fired the ball low into the corner past the visiting goalkeeper.
As the 2nd half wore on Regional began to exert more pressure on the Charleville defence without troubling James Angland in the Charleville goal, whilst Charleville carried a goal threat of their own mainly on the break, as good chances fell to Shane Dillon, Cian McNamara and Eoin Clifford without success.
It was in the 88th minute that Charleville were to pay for these missed opportunities when Regional were awarded a penalty for a push that they duly converted to level the scores.
With the game seemingly destined for extra time, the ever-dangerous Cian McNamara converted at the near post from a low corner to secure the victory for the home side in the 2nd minute of added time.
